Derek is a consultant of the Hicksons’ Transport Trade and Energy team.  Derek is also in the firm’s commercial dispute  resolution practice.  For more than 30 years, Derek has advised on all aspects of international shipping, transport and trade law, including disputes, transactions and regulation.  His work in this area includes advising on: charterparties, contracts of affreightment and bills of lading; ship arrests and judicial sale; shipbuilding and repair; cargo damage; salvage and wreck removal; logistics and distribution, supply chain agreements; insurance and reinsurance coverage and recoveries; export credit and political risk insurance; letters of credit and trade finance; marine pollution, including oil spills and ballast discharge; ship and yacht purchase and chartering; piracy; fishing and whaling; sale of goods and commodities; product liability; construction projects; oil and gas facilities and projects; property risks (transport and static risks); Law of the Sea; and primary production and irrigation.
Derek's clients include ship, plane, train and road haulage owners, charterers, freight forwarders, stevedores, terminal operators, shipbuilders, exporters, importers, commodity traders, primary producers and manufacturers.  He also advises the insurers and financiers of all parties involved in international trade, transport, logistics, energy and resources.
Derek has handled some of Australia’s leading cases involving all areas of the transport, trade, commodities, logistics and energy industries.  Derek is involved in all forms of commercial dispute resolution including arbitration and mediation.  His expertise in this area includes obtaining urgent injunctive relief and enforcing international arbitral awards and judgments in Australia and abroad.  He has represented clients in the High Court, Federal Court, the Supreme Courts of New South Wales and Victoria and various lower courts as well as in international and domestic arbitration tribunals such as the LMAA, GAFTA,  the ICC and AMTAC.  He has also been involved in cases in overseas jurisdictions including the UK, the USA, Singapore, and New Zealand and India.    
Derek is a regular speaker at industry conferences as well as a frequent contributor to industry publications and an active member of various industry associations.  He is an accredited arbitrator with the Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand (MLAANZ), and is also a former chairman of its New South Wales branch.  He is a former chairman of the Maritime and Land Transport Law Committee of the International Bar Association.  He was a member of the Panel which assisted the Australian Law Reform Commission's inquiry into reforming the Australian Marine Insurance Act in 2001.  Derek was listed as one of the world's leading shipping lawyers in the Who's Who of International Shipping in 2010.  Being one of only two Australians, he was also one of a small number of Australians named in earlier and subsequent editions.  Derek has been listed in Euromoney's Guide to the World's Leading Shipping and Marine Lawyers and is on the editorial board of Maritime Risk International.  He is an active member of the International Bar Association, the Comité Maritime Internatnional, the Chartered Institute for Logistics and Transport, the Sydney Marine Discussion Groups and the Average Adjusters Association (London).  Derek has been selected for inclusion in the 2015 edition of The Australian Financial Review Australia's Best Lawyers® for Shipping & Maritime Law and Trade Law.  Derek has regularly appeared in this publication and similar publications abroad for many years.  Derek is a Supporting Member of the London Maritime Arbitrators' Association.
Derek’s recent publications include the Australian chapter in International Cargo Insurance (2012) and The Australian chapter of Enforcement of Judgment Awards and Deeds in Commercial Matters (2013).
Before joining Hicksons in August 2004, Derek led a similar practice in the Sydney office of a large national firm for 21 years.  Prior to that he worked in London for five years, where he developed his interest in maritime law.  Derek began his career in Sydney at Allen Allen and Hemsley.
Derek, who holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Sydney, was admitted as a solicitor in May 1976.
