At Hicksons, we understand how important it is for families to be together. We also understand that families come all different shapes and sizes and have unique experiences and needs.

There are many different visas available for families. It is important that you choose the best visa for you situation.

Visa options include:

  • Child and adoption visas.
  • Carer visas.
  • Aged dependant visas.
  • Parent visas.

Generally, family visas provide permanent residency, though there are some temporary visas as well.

FAQs

How much do family visas cost?

The price depends on the visa that is best suited for you. Some visas have minimal costs while other can reach more than $40,000. There may also be additional fees is there are any secondary applicants applying for the visa with you.

How long will my application take to be granted?

The answer depends on the visa that you apply for. However, all family visas are subject to visa queuing and capping. This means that only a certain number of family visas can be granted per year and the visas are processed in the date order that the applications were lodged.

As at May 2024, the department has processed applications up to June 2017 for contributory parent visa applications, December 2011 for parent visa applications and January 2013 for aged parent visas. The current processing time for contributory parent visas is 12 years and 29 years for parent and aged parent visas. Processing times for other family visas are not currently available.

Will I have to leave Australia during the processing time?

If you apply for the visa is Australia, you will be granted a bridging visa which will allow you to stay in Australia past the expiry of your current visa until your application has been processed. This means that if you apply for a parent visa which has a 29 year processing time, you will be given a bridging visa so that you are able to stay in Australia.

However, it is important to keep in mind that bridging visas can come with certain conditions such as no work or travel. If you are required to work or travel while on a bridging visa, you are able to apply for a second bridging visa without these conditions.
